Saratoga Springs, New York, is a small city of about 30,000 residents situated 30 miles north of Albany, the capital of New York State. Referred to often as "the Jewel of New York's Capital Region", Saratoga Springs is a summer resort known particularly for its thoroughbred horse racing track (which operates for 40 days from late July to early September) but also for its beauty and culture. The Saratoga Performing Arts Center is host to numerous concerts (classical, jazz, and pop) throughout the summer, including the New York City Ballet in July and the Philadelphia Orchestra in August. As a result of its resort status, the city has many excellent hotels, restaurants, a farmer's market, and unique shops in a compact downtown area and is well-known for having a very active nightlife. Saratoga in the summer combines the best of big city excitement and amenities with the ease of a smaller community. Worth mentioning also is that Saratoga Springs lies just south of the beautiful and expansive, 6 million acre, Adirondack Park, an area which offers excellent sight-seeing, hiking, camping and boating activities. In particular, just 30 minutes north of Saratoga Springs and bordering the Adirondack Park, lies Lake George.
