The Foundations of Nonlinear Optics meeting brings together a small group of researchers for two days of open discussion of the fundamental science of nonlinear optics and its applications.
The meeting focuses on fundamental issues of light–matter interaction from the quantum point of view, the transition between quantum and classical perspectives, and the use of the insights gained to design molecules and other artificial structures. The program is designed to cover a broad range of topics while keeping a common focus that sparks new ideas. Unlike large international meetings with many parallel sessions, FoNLO runs a single session so that all attendees spend the meeting together, and invitees are encouraged to attend both days.
Topics
FoNLO 2027 focuses on six themes:
- Quantum limits and magnetic nonlinear response
- Causality, sum rules, and attainable nonlinear bounds
- Molecular nonlinear optics: from molecular design to collective response
- Nonlinear-optical characterization across scales
- Engineering nonlinear interactions in nanophotonic structures
- What nonlinear optical computing actually requires
Format
Each session has three talks on a related topic. Talks are given in the style of a classroom lecture, aimed at a graduate student with a basic knowledge of nonlinear optics, and speakers are not held to a strict time limit. Questions and interruptions during talks are encouraged. Each session closes with a panel discussion with its three speakers, moderated by the session chair and co-chair and open to the audience, followed by a coffee break. Speakers provide background reading in advance that attendees can study or use as a reference.

History
FoNLO grew out of the Symposium on Applications of Sum Rules and Scaling in Nonlinear Optics, held at Washington State University in 2014. Attendees found the format ideal for exchanging ideas, and the meeting continued the next year under its present name. FoNLO 2027 returns to Dayton, where the Air Force Institute of Technology hosted the meeting in 2019.
