Tutorial on quantum nonlinear optics
FoNLO 2018 will focus on the topics of quantum origins of the
nonlinear-optical response with an emphasis on (1) the behavior of
systems in the quantum/classical transition, (2) the magnetic response,
and (3) plasmonic molecules. The results of theory and experiment
will be presented as well as the synthesis of new materials and the
fabrication of structures that enhance the response.
This is the 5th meeting of a series of conferences that started as a symposium on Applications of Sum Rules and Scaling in Nonlinear Optics that was held in August 2014 in Pullman, WA. The follow-up meeting was renamed Foundations of Nonlinear Optics (FoNLO) and was held in August 2015 at Lehigh University, Bethlehem, PA. FoNLO 2016 was held at Tufts University in Medford, MA and in 2017 was hosted by the University of the Bahamas, Nassau.
The meeting focuses on fundamental issues of light-matter interactions from the quantum point of view, the transition between quantum and classical perspectives, and applications of the insights gained to the design of molecules and other artificial structures. The program is designed to maximize the breadth of topics, yet maintain a common focus that fosters stimulating interactions that generate new ideas. Unlike large international meetings with many disjoint parallel sessions of low attendance, our aim is to provide a stimulating program that encourages all attendees to spend time together.
A top priority of the meeting is to promote interactions and to allow discussions to flow freely. The meeting will be informal, with a relaxed schedule. Speakers will present tutorials and research talks with classroom-lecture-style introductions aimed at the level of a graduate student with only a basic knowledge of nonlinear optics. Interruptions for questions and discussions are encouraged followed by panels discussions and group activities. Each speaker is asked to provide documents in advance that can be studied or used as a reference by the attendees.
Students at all levels are encouraged to attend.

Organization
The meeting will take place on June 19-21, 2018, on the campus of Skidmore College. You can check here for details about the location and travel.
The
three days of the conference will be dedicated to tutorials, plenary
talks, panel discussions and lots of interactions. Background reading
materials provided by the speakers
and available to everyone ahead of time. The meeting does not have a
registration fee but attendees are still required to register. Details
will be provided in the future. Good-value housing will be available on
campus and
in nearby hotels.
Food will be providing during the day, and there will be a conference dinner.
